Create Longer URLs with these sites!

Oct 22, 2007 Author: Vijay | Filed under: Fun Services

Services like TinyURL are dime a dozen out there and they offer to shorten long URL’s in order to help you post them easily on any place from forums to blogs and even on paper. It is a fact that long URL’s are annoying to read and remember. They also break blog and website templates causing the URL alone to stick out like a sore thumb ruining the look of your blog.

But for those who really want to annoy their friends there are a few services that create longer or harder-to-remember URLs from simpler URLs and you can use these to have some fun of your own. As they say Bigger is Better and Size does Matter after all ;)

Longer URL

This service offers you the option to choose the length of the final URL. The minimum length is 100 and the maximum length is 1000. Configurable I guess!

Huge URL @ Wiggy

This service does not simply lengthen the URL but gives you options to apply different styles and then create a new URL from your old fashioned one. The styles include MD5, Base 64, UUID, Swedish Chef etc.

HugeURL

This site has no options for you. It’s simple and straightforward. Just put in your URL and presto, you get a really long one instantly! I got a 1565 character URL approx.

LongerURL @ DMWH

Another run-of-the-mill service. You get a 650 character output approx.

WideURL

This service lengthens the URLs to a not-too-annoying but yet noticeable amount, say around 100 characters. Also, the unique feature of this service is that it uses hyphens in the resulting URL that makes it eye catching and this makes it hard to miss such an URL when you post it.

That was how Siteguide looked like. It is pretty much like spelling out the word Siteguide..

Those were the services I was able to find.. If you have any other suggestions, let me know! Do consider sharing if you find it interesting!

Well, the name pretty much tells everything here as well. So I’ve got little left to explain.

All you have to do is:

  • Choose the warning label you want from the list of labels given.
  • Then select a symbol to be used in the warning label.
  • Then enter upto 6 lines of stuff which constitutes your warning message
  • Click the “Generate warning label” button to generate the label

You end up with a 500×250 JPEG image. The image size is not negotiable of course. Click on the image below to visit the site.

Create a search engine with your name as the logo

Aug 21, 2007 Author: Vijay | Filed under: Fun Services

Most services come automated these days and this one is no different. Using HotShadow, you are able to create a logo out of your own name and create a search page using that logo. Let me tell you how it works.

  • Visit Hotshadow
  • Enter your name
  • You will be provided with a variety of default design styles from which you have to choose one.

The various font styles include the style of the Coca-Cola font, the Yahoo! font, the Harry Potter font, the Star Wars font and so on.

  • Once you are done choosing the font style, you need to choose the color style or the design of the font. The color contents of the font text, actually.

  • After this, a page with code is provided to insert the image(logo) as well as to link to the search engine page with your logo. Just copy, paste and enjoy

The search engine page is created by using Google Custom Search. It is pretty easy to set up custom search by yourself as well. But well, this just makes it simpler I guess. Also, you may be next in line for copyright infringement on the logo, if your page ever gets popular ;) . Tell me if you found this service fun! Thanks for reading.

Swap your favorite link for another

Aug 7, 2007 Author: Vijay | Filed under: Fun Services

This site is pretty much a cousin of the drawing-swap thingy. Well, no explanations needed here whatsoever.

You enter any link you want as your favorite and the service returns to you a “favorite link” of another user.

However, if the link you submitted has been submitted already, then, too bad, you will have to enter another link. Of course, subdomains and folders within domain names can be submitted. i.e. mail.yahoo.com or www.xyz.com/abc.

There isn’t anything to explain here, so I’ll just link you to the site right away. :D
