IMO.IM

Most of you probably would not have heard about this Online Instant Messaging client called imo.im. This fact is quite apparent since the imo.im page neither has any pagerank nor any alexa rank indicating a low-traffic and few linkbacks. But that is not surprising seeing that Meebo probably rules the roost in the list of online IM clients.

imo.im was a service that was started as recently as two months ago if one goes by the solitary entry in their official blog.

What is imo.im?

As I said earlier, it is an online IM client that supports four services currently including Yahoo!, MSN, Google Talk and AIM. All you have to do is simply login to the service you want using your Username and Password. You are able to be logged in to all the four services at the same time, but you have to log in to each service separately. That is, first you can login to Yahoo! and then to AIM and so on.

The Design:

The design is what we can call plain and simple. Much of the homepage is white with only the login area and the imo.im logo. But do not get fooled by the simple interface, the service works perfectly even though it is in Alpha. The design is nowhere as flashy as meebo, but if it is the service you are looking at, you would not be disappointed.

The Features:

One of the important features of imo.im is the ability to link your accounts in the four different services together.

Once you’ve logged on to 2 or more services, then all you have to do is to simply click on “link accounts” and automatically all the accounts will be linked. So, the next time you visit imo.im, you have to simply log in to only one of the four accounts and automatically you will be logged on to the other three as well. Unlike meebo, you are not able to create user accounts, but this feature makes up for the lack of that.

You are also able to add new buddies and engage yourself in group chat as well. You can set your own status. Thus, imo.im offers most of the conventional necessities required for a IM client.

For those who are wondering what the dot im extension stands for, it is the domain name extension for the Isle of Man.

Keyboard Shortcuts:

First, you can easily move from one conversation to another by pressing the ‘tab’ button on your keyboard. Second, if your boss decides to drop by for an unannounced visit, you can close a conversation in a jiffy by pressing escape (esc). Lastly, to move your cursor to the “search buddies” text box, press forward slash (/).
