Give one file, Get one free

Feb 27, 2007 Author: Vijay | Filed under: Fun Services, Miscellaneous

This is the slogan with which a service called file-swap identifies itself with. And not at all off the mark, I should say.

The function of this site is exactly what it states. You can swap files, but under the condition that you won’t know what you are getting in exchange.

This is how it works:

  • You upload a file from your Hard Disk which is less than 500 KiB
  • The file gets uploaded and as an exchange for your contribution, you get a link to download another file uploaded by some other user.

You may not receive a file with the extension you uploaded, but sometimes that may be the case. Also the size of the file you get in return for your upload may also not be the same size as your upload.

Before you upload, the site asks you to confirm 2 things:

1. The content must NOT be copyrighted [Yeah, right]

2. You agree to let anybody else view it anywhere.

The file size limit for uploads is only 500 Kib which is hardly anything, but that is to prevent an excess load on their server.

You can swap files like:

  • Pictures
  • PDFs
  • Text
  • Audio

You cannot swap:

  • Archives
  • Executable files
  • Font files [as I found out]

Oh yeah, and the link to the site is as follows:

  • Gmail: Generate unlimited e-mail addresses

Feb 22, 2007 Author: Vijay | Filed under: Unique Services, Web Hacks

Gmail has an interesting quirk where you can add a plus sign (+) after your Gmail address, and it’ll still get to your inbox. It’s called plus-addressing, and it essentially gives you an unlimited number of e-mail addresses to play with.

    Necessity: A gmail e-mail ID, e.g abc@gmail.com

Here’s how it works: Say your address is pinkyrocks@gmail.com, and you want to automatically label all work e-mails. Add a plus sign and a phrase to make it pinkyrocks+work@gmail.com and set up a filter to label it “work” (to access your filters go to Settings->Filters and create a filter for messages addressed to pinkyrocks+work@gmail.com. Then add the label “work” or any other label of your choosing, in the next step).

    General Syntax: [gmailuserid]+[filter term]@gmail.com

    Agloco referral

    More real world examples:

+Find out who is spamming you:

Be sure to use plus-addressing for every form you fill out online and give each site a different plus address.

    Example:

    You could use
    pinkyrocks+nytimes@gmail.com for nytimes.com
    pinkyrocks+freestuff@gmail.com for freestuff.com
Then you can tell which site has given your e-mail address to spammers by looking at the filters, and automatically send them to the trash.

    +Automatically label your incoming mail:

    I’ve talked about that above.

    +Archive your mail:

If you receive periodic updates about your bank account balance or are subscribed to a lot of mailing lists that you don’t check often, then you can send that sort of mail to the archives and bypass your Inbox.

    Example:

For the mailing list, you could give pinkyrocks+mailinglist1@gmail.com as your address, and assign a filter that will archive mail to that address automatically. Then you can just check in once in a while on the archive if you want to catch up.

    Newspaper Clipping Generator

Feb 22, 2007 Author: Vijay | Filed under: Fun Services

Well, the title says it all. It is a service which you can use to generate a newspaper clipping. You have to enter the name of the newspaper, the headline and the content.

The service will automatically generate a newspaper clipping. Remember, it only generates a clipping of a newspaper and not the entire first page or something like that.So this may just be used for purposes of entertainment and nothing more.
The service is effective, but there are a few hitches as expected.

    • If you enter a newspaper that has a three word name, only then does it look realistic. A two word newspaper name makes it look as if the heading is aligned to the left.
    • The font leaves much to be desired. It does look as if it is some 100 year old newspaper, but the content makes it seem different.

It could have been made more realistic, I guess, but heck, its free and complaining may not exactly be right. But of course, I am entitled to my opinions and thats what is seen above.

  • E-mail sig generator – All in one

Feb 20, 2007 Author: Vijay | Filed under: Privacy Protection, Unique Services

I must say that I had not looked carefully when I posted last. This time around, I did come across a site that generated e-mail sigs, like I mention in my previous post.

Only difference is that this site offers sigs for a lot of e-mail providers. The purpose behind it is pretty much similar to the one in the last post. Check that for details.

But if you want sigs only for gmail, the previous site is the best, as it offers 3 different types of images all of which look more elegant.

The link to this site is:

    Nexodyne E-mail Icon Generator.

And yes, it is indeed free.

  • This is another simple, straightforward service.

Need: You need to display your e-mail ID to visitors on your blog, website etc.

The Problem: Typing the e-mail ID out, or using a mail to: link will ensure that atleast one spambot gets hold of it every hour on the hour[this depends on how popular your site is].

The Solution: Just as spam e-mails to your inbox arrive with their contents embedded in images, you can just embed your e-mail ID in an image. [The image is good looking as well]. Simply enter your e-mail ID into the box and get 3 different images containing your e-mail ID generated at once. This is of course, free. :D

The Hitch: Currently this site offers the service only for gmail IDs.

    Location: Go here

    Examples:

    Gmail Id image 3

    Gmail Id image 2

    Gmail Id image 3

Hope you find that useful. If you find any other similar service for other e-mail providers, feel free to contact me.

    Cheers
